In a world of fast fashion and fleeting trends, AMORFIRST stands out with a simple but radical mission: to lead with love. This conscious brand blends maximal design with sustainable practices, creating pieces that are as intentional as they are beautiful.

Now, in its 7th year post-relaunch, Los Angeles native and AMORFIRST Executive Creative Director Sulema Fernandez-Honn continues to draw on her heritage and love of L.A. to craft pieces that hold a deep reverence for craftsmanship, community, and the emotional connection we carry with the jewelry we wear.

Sulema spoke with Wearing about her design inspiration, handcrafting process, and some of her favorite AMORFIRST pieces.

AMORFIRST showcases some pretty dynamic pieces. What inspires your designs?

I find inspiration everywhere, especially in my community and the beautifully diverse cultures that make up Los Angeles. My Mexican American heritage is a deep well of influence, from the bold colors of Mexican folk art to the nostalgia of old movies, music, decades past, and iconic artists. Whether it’s a mural in East L.A., a favorite song, or a cherished memory, I pull from everything I find meaningful and beautiful.

For the collections that incorporate color through gemstones, do they have a special meaning?

Yes, each stone is chosen with intention and meaning. Every collection begins with a story or inspiration, whether it’s nature, a decade, a celestial theme, or something deeply personal. For example, I created a Lotus Collection inspired by the lotus flower’s symbolism of resilience and renewal, and Celestine was all about stars, moons, and the magic of the cosmos. Another favorite, Studio 72, was a vibrant tribute to disco and the energy of the ’70s.

The beauty of stones is in their incredible variety, their tones, textures, and natural uniqueness. Depending on the story I’m telling and the visual effect I want to create, I choose stones that reflect the emotion and aesthetic of the piece. I’ve worked with everything from different shades of onyx, aquamarine, prehnite, and opals to chalcedony, turquoise, and so much more. Each stone carries its own energy, and together they help bring each design and its message to life.

Why is it important to you that AMORFIRST jewelry is handcrafted?

There’s something deeply meaningful about pieces made by hand; they carry a soul, a story, and a human touch that machines simply can’t replicate. Every piece is unique, like a fingerprint, because no two are exactly alike. That’s the beauty of handcrafted jewelry; it’s more than adornment; it becomes a personal treasure. Our designs are made in limited quantities and meant to be heirloom-worthy, created with the intention that they can be passed down through generations.

How does the process work?

It all begins with a concept, a moment, a story, a feeling I want to bring to life. From there, I design the piece, select the materials, and refine the specifications, choosing the right metals, stones, and finishes. I work closely with a talented team of artisans from India, Thailand, and Mexico who help transform these visions into reality.

Once the design is finalized, we begin with a prototype or mock-up, which I carefully review and tweak until it feels just right. Only then do we begin small-batch production. Every piece is carefully handcrafted by experienced artisans, ensuring quality, soul, and artistry in each detail.

If you had to narrow down some of your personal favorites, what would they be?

I have a deep love for each collection, but a few pieces hold a special place in my heart:

These are a tribute to the spirit of Mesoamerica, inspired by the artistic legacy of the Mexica and Maya civilizations. With sculptural lines that echo pyramids and ancient carvings, and stones like turquoise, onyx, and gold, they carry a story of heritage, power, and sacred beauty.

A tribute to the beauty of change. These earrings embody transformation like a butterfly in mid-flight, wrapped in delicate golden branches and kissed by multicolored stones. With a bohemian soul and a romantic, old-world elegance, they’re a wearable symbol of growth, renewal, and radiant evolution.
