“Go to Marc. He’ll dress you for your trial,” jokes Marc Jacobs halfway through the much-anticipated trailer for Marc by Sofia.
The beloved designer is, of course, referring to famously dressing the likes of Winona Ryder, Lil Kim, and Courtney Love for their trial appearances back in the day. The ease with which Jacobs openly and warmly shares his personal insight into his life in the fashion industry with longtime friend and director Sofia Coppola is the key to this documentary. The two have known each other for over 30 years. Coppola discovered Jacobs at his legendary Spring ’93 grunge collection for Perry Ellis. “Marc was referencing things I cared about that I hadn’t seen in the mainstream fashion before,” states Coppola. “One of the kids was making something that I was into, and I could feel that we liked the same things, whether it was music or movies or art. You felt that connection in the clothes.”

Marc by Sofia is Coppola’s first documentary, which premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival. Throughout the squeal-worthy trailer, you get a glorious visual taste of Jacobs’ world as he speaks with his confidant/director on his design inspiration, the meticulous planning that goes into his runway shows, and his passion for working with other artists. “The clothes are the main part, but it’s really about telling a little story made out of shapes and colors and fabrics,” says Jacobs. “I can’t wait to see it all come together,” Coppola responds. And neither can we. Marc by Sofia is scheduled for release on March 27th.
