The 2019 Met Gala marked the first time Salvatore Ferragamo blessed the red carpet with celebrity styles. Needless to say, it was the fashion house’s biggest night under creative director Paul Andrew, who created custom looks for Lili Reinhart, Taron Egerton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Cole Sprouse, and more. But, it was Solange Knowles’ head-to-toe custom python-print Ferragamo bodysuit, jacket, and boots that put the “camp” in that year’s Camp: Notes on Fashion theme.
Andrew shared he wanted to work with Knowles because of her “inherent instinct to go her own way,” sharing with Vogue “We created a look with unexpected materials while paying home to the ‘camp’ theme through an exaggeration of python skin, and the masculine structure of the jacket cut paired with the femininity of our ‘F wedge’ thigh-high boots.”
There were critics and fans alike at the time who were disappointed that Knowles didn’t wear a more daring, unexpected, or over-the-top outfit (maybe they didn’t see the live snake she used to accessorize her look that night). But we love that Andrew styled Knowles in a look that may have seemed understated but actually screamed fierce, theatrical, and unforgettable.
