Nicole Richie celebrates the joy of vintage fashion with Fashionphile and the CFDA, sharing her love for YSL, Chanel, and sustainable resale style.
Nicole Richie has always had a knack for mixing nostalgia with modern ease—and her latest conversation with FASHIONPHILE and the CFDA reminds us why vintage fashion never loses its shine.

On the premiere of “Responsible Fashion: Designing for Retail,” presented by the CFDA and FASHIONPHILE, Richie joined journalist Sophia Li and FASHIONPHILE founder and president Sarah Davis to discuss sustainable style, vintage fashion, and the influence of resale. In the video that dropped today, Richie opens up about her favorite vintage treasures.
Here are the Top Moments We Love:
- Mom’s Chanel Handbags: Richie shared that her mother had been collecting Chanel purses for years—and during the lavish 1980s, her closet was practically a love letter to the brand. “She would say to me, ‘Nikki, these are all going to be yours one day,’” Richie recalled. “The leather and gold chain is just like imprinted in my mind.” True to her word, the House of Harlow creative director still treasures those Chanel bags today.
- Vintage Yves Saint Laurent Capes?!: Richie spotlighted a few standout pieces she holds close—like her collection of vintage YSL capes (“a lot,” she admits) that she rarely wears but deems incredibly important to her. She also mentioned her vintage Yves Saint Laurent jewelry and, naturally, her vintage Chanel bags—hand-me-down treasures courtesy of her mother.
- Vintage Shopping at its Best: During the conversation, Richie opened up about the joy of vintage shopping and the magic that comes with it. “Some of the most amazing, inspiring outfits that I’ve seen have come from me being in a vintage store,” she said. She went on to describe the kind of encounters that make the experience special—when stylish women of a certain age walk in wearing their best looks and instantly light up the room. “They’ll come in and the person who works at the store is like, ‘Oh my god, that’s amazing, I love your hat,’” Richie said. “And instead of just saying thank you, she’s giving you a whole story of where she found this hat, where she found the brooch that she put on the hat, and where she got the necklace… It’s just like its own story.”
